Discrimination

This means being unfair to someone because they are different to you.

This could be because of their:

  • sex
  • race
  • disability
  • age
  • religion or belief
  • sexual orientation (eg gay, lesbian, bisexual, straight)
  • gender reassignment
or because they:
  • are married or in a civil partnership
  • are pregnant or have recently given birth

Law

The Equality Act is a law to help people get fair treatment.

The law says that people should be treated fairly when they go to school, college, university or work.

It also says they must be treated fairly when they buy things or use services.

For example, they should not be treated unfairly because they have a disability.
