Connexions is the lead agency working with young people in your area. We have many years experience placing young people into work and training and want to share our experience with employers to help you successfully recruit and retain your young staff.

Before you start to recruit a young person, think about the following:

  1. If you want to recruit a school leaver, it's all about timing. Tell us about your vacancies in January so school leavers can apply before they start preparing for their exams.
  2. Are you asking the right questions? You may need to change your recruitment process to take into account the age of your candidates.
  3. Today's young people leave school and college with a wide range of qualifications. To short list the most appropriate candidates you’ll need to know a little bit about how qualifications compare.
  4. The right training can make your vacancy more attractive. It will improve your workforce by raising skills levels and help to motivate and retain staff.
  5. Apprenticeships are Government funded work based training programmes for 16 – 24? year olds and give you the chance to develop the skilled staff you need for your business.
  6. Help your young employee settle in, give them a buddy from day one. Your new recruit can ask their buddy all those embarrassing questions, 'Where do I buy lunch?', 'How does the photocopier work?'
  7.  Are you aware of the employment legislation that affects young employees? We can provide you with information and point you in the right direction.
